Weighted blankets have gone from niche to mainstream, and with that comes plenty of confusing advice. Here's a clear look at what's true, what isn't, and how to choose one that stays comfortable.
Myth: "Weighted blankets are always hot."
Fact: Heat depends mostly on materials. Breathable covers — bamboo viscose, Tencel lyocell or cotton percale — and slim glass-bead fill sleep far cooler than plush minky with plastic pellets.
Myth: "Heavier is more relaxing."
Fact: A common starting point is roughly 10% of your body weight. Going much heavier often just feels stuffy. Warm sleepers tend to prefer slightly lighter.
Myth: "Bigger is better."
Fact: Weighted blankets are designed to cover one person. A body-sized blanket stays centered and uses less fabric — which also means less heat.
Myth: "You can't wash them."
Fact: Many come with a removable, machine-washable cover. The weighted inner layer may need spot cleaning or a large-capacity washer, so check the label.
Your cool-blanket checklist
Round out a cool bed with breathable cotton sheets, a cooling pillow and gentle airflow from a fan or portable cooler.
Weighted blankets aren't recommended for infants or toddlers; children should use one only with guidance from a pediatrician. If you have a breathing, circulation or sleep-related condition, talk to your doctor first.
